The Theory - Word Count is King
I have a simple theory.
It’s a theory based on my years of experience as an affiliate marketer and niche website entrepreneur.
In short, the idea is that…
The more words you publish, the more money you will make.
It’s not rocket science.
It took me years to figure out after struggling with crazy shiny object syndrome.
You name it I tried it — CPA, funnels, arbitrage, network marketing, ClickBank, high ticket sales etc.
I chased the “make money online” dream and failed many times. Over and over again.
Those of you who struggle with AD(H)D like me know how easy it is to get distracted.
There are a lot of stops and starts. You get something going and then another shiny object distracts you.
You go down a new rabbit hole and all of the progress you made on your last endeavor goes to waste.
It’s a really shitty cycle to be stuck in.
Perhaps you can relate?
Let’s rewind a few years.
Around 2015, I built a small “niche” website in the education space. It was another rabbit hole for me, and after putting a ton of focus into it for a few weeks, I forgot about it and moved to something else.
It sat there quietly and a year later was seeing a bit of traffic and a tiny bit of income.
I said, hmm, perhaps I should put a little more effort into it.
So, I did, added a few more articles, forgot about it again, and moved on to something else.
And again, a few months went by, I made a bit more and did another push, lost interest and moved on to something else.
Rinse and repeat this incremental process off and on for a few years and fast forward to 2019.
At that point, I was somehow earning around $1000-$1500 per month in passive income.
The little niche website had become the persistent survivor among many failures.
I was really starting to get the hint that I should really put all of my focus into this thing.
And I did.
I did a big, focused publishing push.
I published over 100 new articles in a year!
I launched 2 new new websites and purchased a third.
Now, in 2021, things are really starting to click.
If you are interested in learning more about my progression over the past few years, check out this interview I did with Doug Cunnington on YouTube.
To give you some concrete numbers, at the time I am writing this (January 2021), I have about 300,000 words of published content across my websites.
From that $ and earn passive income between $2,000 – $6,000 per month.
So, on average I am earning roughly .01 – .02 cents per word, per month.
It’s pretty awesome.
This bit of success has inspired me to want to scale up as much as I can.
So, I came up with an idea…
The One Million Word Challenge
If I can make .01 – .02 per word off of 300,000 words on my sites, why can’t I make .01 – .02 per word ad infinitum.
My challenge to myself is to publish one million new words across my websites by 12/31/21.
I recorded the above video in November of 2020, did a soft launch, and officially started my challenge on 1/1/21.
That means I need to publish an average of 83,333 words per month.
1,000,000 words / 12 months = 83, 333 words per month.
There’s no way in hell that I am going to write that many words myself.
So, I have to outsource, create systems, and build and manage a team to support these efforts.
Let’s be conservative and say I only make .01c per word, per month.
So, simple math: .01 per word x one million words = $10,000 per month I will have added to my (mostly passive) income by the end of 2021.
That’s $120,000 per year of PASSIVE income.
Even if I “only” am able to generate half of that, $60,000 is a respectable full time income for most.
It would be life changing money for me, and assuming it would be for you too.
Compelling stuff, right?
My Challenge to Myself:
- Publish one million words by 12/31/21. I’m officially starting this challenge on 1/1/21, which gives me a full year to finish the challenge. So, that’s an average of at least 83,333 words I have to publish per month.
- Document my progress, struggles and successes in detail on this blog and on YouTube!
My Challenge to You:
- Set a word count goal that is reasonable for your particular situation.
- If you are writing the content yourself, work a full time job, and are completely new to niche website building you may want to start more conservatively.
- If you have the budget to be able to hire writers, you can be more ambitious with your word count.
- Whether it is 10,000 words per month or 100,000 words per month, join me on this challenge and let’s change the world!
